Hanoi, Vietnam

My trip to Hanoi in Vietnam was very mind opening, at times intimidating (trying to cross the  street), destabilizing and above all amazing.  The people, the traffic, the food, the environment, the experience; all of it was beyond anything I could have expected and Lord knows I had done quite a bit of research before going.  I will share with you in this post and future posts my different experiences in the different regions of Vietnam.  How we fared, what we learned, what we experienced and above all give a voice to this wonderful, gentle, amazing and resilient people.  Please enjoy the voyage with me.

Vespas buzz by your feet. Advice given to us by the Vietnamese people. 'when crossing the street don't wait for a break in traffic for their isn't any, start crossing the steet at a steady pace. Do not increase or decrease your pace. The traffic will avoid you but only if they know and can gauge your speed' That was very encouraging to us.

Everytime I crossed the street I felt like I was putting my life in someone else's hands.

Taking a break. The women street vendors are the lowest on the totem pole of sales people. They have a very difficult life often coming in from the surrounding villages to make money to send home. They will get up at 3am to go to the wholesale market to fill up their baskets. Then they spend the day on the streets in order to sell their wares and will not go home until everything is sold. Sometimes they are still out selling at 7pm. They manage to send home on average $20 a month.

Citta Magazine published photoshoot

Back in September and October, I had the wonderful priviledge of working with one of the editors of a new magazine called Citta as well as two wonderful models who were up to trying almost anything to obtain beautiful German Burlesque inspired images.  We drew inspiration from many sources including Ellen Von Unwerth.  Our objective was to produce images that were compelling and that told a story of the burlesque world of old.  The models Marie Doroftei and Eloise Bélanger were wonderful.  Marie who is also a hairdresser did all the hair and makeup you see in the images.  A great job was done by all and some or all of the following images were published in Citta’s launch which took place at the end of October 2012.  Check out this wonderful magazine which was launched to bring together artists from Montreal the the world and artists from around the world to Montreal. http://www.cittamagazine.ca/

The Children of Vietnam

I recently went on a three week journey to Vietnam.  We travelled from as far north as Sapa  all the way to the Mekong Delta in the South.  What impressed me time and again were the children.  Whether they were in the north or 2000 km further south, they were happy, easy going, obedient, played with nothing and still had fun and very rarely did we hear any of them cry, throw a tantrum or complain.  We, as well as our children, have alot to learn from this gentle, loving people who have faced so much adversity and hardships over the years and who are still very poor, barely make enough to get by, are the hardest working people I have ever met, are extremely helpful and all this always sporting a beautiful smile and wonderful attitude.  Enjoy a few of the portraits I took while on my travels.

These young girls gestured to us from the street (we were eating in a second floor restaurant) to purchase a floating lantern from them. They waited for almost an hour while we ate and of course we could not resist buying a few of their lanterns. School night, it was dark and getting late and no parents were around. But they sat their and giggled the entire time we watched.

This young boy wanted his picture taken but was so shy that the first few pictures I took all you could see was the top of his head because he was looking at the ground so much. With sign language and the help of our guide, I was able to have him look up. The only smile I got was when he finally saw himself on the back of my camera.

Outdoor Lifestyle Shoot at Place Ste-Catherine

I recently did a lifestyle photoshoot at Plage Ste-Catherine’s Recreo Park.  It was a beautiful day, in an idealic setting and I was working with a beautiful, sweet model.  Emilie is great to work with and is willing to do what it takes (within reason of course) to get that perfect shot.  As you can see, I think we succeded in getting beautiful material to work with.  Hope you enjoy and please, feel free to share and leave your comments.
